The History of the Station

In the early years of the 20th century, radio took its first steps in Mississippi shortly before World War I. The Magnolia State produced early electronic pioneers who built stations for both Morse code and later for voice transmissions.

In 1927, there was a need for daily cotton market reports in the Delta area of Mississippi. A radio station, WQBC, was licensed on February 18, 1928, for the town of Utica, Mississippi. It was built and operated by I.R. Jones, a licensed engineer. It broadcast from one room of an old school building.

The station was moved to Vicksburg in 1931, when the Cashman Family purchased it, who were also owners and publishers of the local newspaper, the Vicksburg Evening Post. When the Federal Communications Commission ruled that corporations could not own a radio station and a local newspaper in the same market, the station was sold to Mr. Frank Hollifield and the location was moved to the area of Cherry and South Streets in downtown Vicksburg. Mrs. Elizabeth Pwens acquired WQBC and maintained ownership until 1987, when Mr. Bill Stanford purchased the station in a stock transfer that also involved another radio station in Tallulah, Louisiana. Mr. Stanford moved WQBC to its present location at 3190 Porters Chapel Road in Vicksburg.

Today, WQBC radio holds the tradition of being the oldest operating station in the state of Mississippi and one of the very few radio stations in the entire nation that still maintain the original call letters. Many broadcasters count WQBC as an important part of their careers including Adrian Cronhauer (Good Morning Vietnam), Woody Assaff of WLBT TV in Jackson, Mississippi as well as a host of local, regional and national talents.

What We Believe

  • We believe the Bible to be inspired, the only infallible Word of God.

  • We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe in the deity of Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father and in His personal return in power and glory.

  • We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful man, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.

  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in Christ.

    Our Strategy

  • We will not lose heart.

  • We will not alter the message.

  • We will not manipulate the results, because we understand that a profound spiritual reality is at work in those who do not believe.

  • We will not expect popularity, and therefore, we will not be disappointed.

  • We will not be concerned with visible and earthly success but devote our efforts toward that which is unseen and eternal.
